A Seat at the Table Books is a family-owned "third space" bookstore in Elk Grove, California, that fosters community through a book selection curated around representation, eco-friendly coffee, and mission-driven events. We strive to be safe and affirming for all identities. As a third space, we're somewhere you belong outside of home and work. As part of our mission, we have a cafe with eco-friendly hot coffee, cold brew, and tea, along with locally baked pastries, breakfast and lunch options, beer and wine, and even floats! We're also an event venue and accept reservations. Founder Emily Autenrieth (ey/em) saw a need in the community for a space where people of all ages and identities could be themselves and learn about others. With eir spouse Ryan's support, Emily opened a pop-up and online bookstore out of the family's home in January 2020 and started to build up a supportive community. After getting a lease on a former float spa in April 2021 and remodeling it from floor to ceiling, Emily and Ryan opened the brick-and-mortar store in November 2021. We have been featured by ABC10 on multiple occasions, including as the first-ever winner of the ABC10 “We Stand For You Business of the Year” award, for Pride coverage in 2024, and for our community work.

We offer a thoughtfully curated selection of books across fiction and nonfiction for all ages, including children and young adult readers. Our collection spans a wide range of themes and topics, with rotating seasonal and holiday titles, audiobooks, staff favorites, and store bestsellers. We also feature a dedicated selection of banned books. Our goal is to provide a safe, affirming space with books that reflect and represent all identities.

Looking for unique gifts that aren't books? You can find puzzles for all ages, candles, mugs, and all sorts of goodies for any budget!

Our cafe offers eco-roasted coffee and tea, Italian sodas, flavored lemonades, cocktails, beer & wine, food, locally made pastries, and some fun staff creations. Full cafe service runs daily until 6:00 PM.

Slow down and reconnect with the simple joy of creating by hand. From fountain pens and journals to calligraphy sets, watercolor kits, puzzles, and coloring books, our Analog Living collection invites you to step away from screens and engage with the tactile, creative world around you.

We host a wide range of events, from book clubs and craft days to drag storytimes, poetry performances, and more.

This is the spot for meetings and book clubs, mixers and workshops, birthday parties, and intimate weddings! Our 3,000-square-foot store has several spaces of different sizes to meet your event needs. Our welcoming, bookish environment with a cafe, sound system, projector, quiet room, and gender-neutral restrooms is perfect for a wide range of events.
